Spring ASPirations

The Silesian Culture Centre’s main purpose is promoting artists at different stages of their professional careers, among them prominent artists and lecturers from the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice as well as people recommended by them. This is the role of annual April exhibitions called “Spring ASPirations” (“ASP” stands for “Akademia Sztuk Pięknych” i.e.Academy of Fine Arts).

The initiative was approved gladly by the ASP lecturers and thus, since 2014 three exhibitions have been organized:

2014 – Jan Szmatloch “The Architecture of Memory”

The author:

Lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts, in charge of the Intaglio Printing Studio in the structure of the Chair of Graphic Art. Etching and drawing are his main fields. The dominating theme in his works is Upper Silesia, especially its cityscape. His etchings show disruptive, dramatic changes which are touching this region nowadays.

The exhibition:

It presented selected etchings, typical of Prof.Szmatloch’s main cycles: The Windows, The Slopes, The Crossovers, No Address, Still Life, Silesian Calendars.

2015 – Roman Kalarus “Posters, Graphics, Collages”

The author:

Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice, graphic artist, poster designer, xylographer. His art is one of the most recognizable hallmarks in Upper Silesia, as it comprises both sacred and a bit perverse, erotic aspects presented in a very original, characteristic of this artist style.

The exhibition:

It presented an overview of different kinds of Prof.Kalarus’s art: a large collection of posters (all made in his characteristic hand style in the screen printing technique), collages, drawings, and colored xylographs.

2016 – Ireneusz Walczak “Simulacrum?”

The author:

Professor at the Chair of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice; painting is his chief artistic activity. He is interested in the psychoanalysis and condition of contemporary men as well as questions on identity. He also deals with the problems of social and cultural affiliation.

The exhibition:

The author built the narration on the canvas of his three latest cycles: My house is my language, Multikulti, Loading, please wait…. Some pictures were constructed as boxes releasing the story from its two-dimensional constraint.

2017 – Adam Romaniuk “The Afterimages of the Sign”

The author:

Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice. He deals with printmaking (lithography, serigraphy), computer graphics, painting, posters, graphics design and book graphics.

The exhibition:

Selected collection of works from the last 15 years made in the digital printing technology (cycles “Afterimages”, “Carnival”, “Deposit”, “Dialogue”, “Breakwater”, “Similarities”) and an intermedia exhibition “Afterimages – Jagielnica”, prepared especially for the exhibition at the Centre and being a reminiscence of Romaniuk’s visit to his home town Jagielnica in Ukraine.

2018 – Karol Wieczorek “Shadows”

The author:

independent creator, not tied to didactic activities with any university; an artist with a very high reputation in the artistic environment, extremely appreciated by leading Polish critics and art experts.

The exhibition:

In the Center Wieczorek showed works of a very diverse nature and period of creation –drawings, paintings, installations, often performed with his original own technique.

2019 Zbigniew Furgaliński “Horizons”

The author:

He runs the Visual Arts Studio at the Design Department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice. Specializes in colored lithography, easel and architectural painting.

The exhibition:

The theme connecting the images was the horizon, understood by the Author as a boundary, a physical and metaphysical concept at the same time. He showed it in the form of an extract of the landscape, brought to an elemental sign, which is a horizontal line, enriched with pulsating light penetrating from under the image.

2020 Jacek Rykała “Black Sun”

The author:

Painter, poet, director, playwright. He is a full professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice, where he runs the Painting Workshop. The artist’s specialty is portraying city backyards and alleys in which there is a deep fascination with the long-gone childhood era.

The exhibition:

It had a retrospective character. The most important works of prof. Jacek Rykała came from the last 20 years, but about half of them were new paintings, including those presented for the first time at the exhibition in the Center.
